I've used Shure SM57 and SM58's for 90% of my recording needs. When I need something different, I've used a Samson CO1 (condenser). All of these are under 120$.

The Shure microphones are used by studios... the SM57 is practically a must-have if you want to record an electric guitar.

There are better microphones out there, I'm sure, but these have worked very well for me. Of course, they don't match a tube mic, but what does?
