Is Table Setting A Dying Art?
In many traditional family stories, everyone gets together for an evening meal and lunch, hanging out the table. This is clearly the setup in our grandparents’ generation and before that. It did not matter what your social status was - family meals were essential occasions that always happened around a table. So if you were a family of farm workers, the moment Dad and the boys came back from the fields, you would sit down together around a wood table in your cottage and eat. And if you were an aristocrat, dinner can be served by a uniformed maid at a long table in the dining room. The atmosphere were different - but the concept had been the same.
However, as contemporary technologies began to dominate our lives, the family structure began to change. When the omnipresent television started to take over the living room as well as other rooms of the house, we observed that we all no longer looked at each other during meals. There is always the ever-present guest that ate nothing but spewed out a visual feast - the Television set. This changed the very idea of the family meal forever, with the introduction of the TV dinner. A TV dinner basically includes everyone parked around the sofa along with a tray on their laps, looking at the box while they mechanically stuff the food into their mouths. Discussion is not allowed because you may overlook some of the action on screen, which is evidently more important to some individuals.
So does this mean that the ancient art of table setting has gone out of the window, along with family values, unity, and the art of fine discussion? Get tasks like napkin folding, setting silverware, and elegantly arranging plates gone out with the Ark?
The truth is - not necessarily. You can preserve the family meal and not to lose the unity and ties that it generates. Essentially, the fastest, most radical solution will be to get rid of the TV. Then, everybody would have to sit at a table and communicate since they would have nothing else to perform at mealtimes (other than eat, of course). However, not everyone would likely agree to do this. So here are a handful of more modest suggestions:
Reduce TV time, getting everybody to agree that at least at dinner time the tv stays off.
Set the table. Surprisingly, table setting can in fact be fun. Your kids can take turns on who does it each time. The individual having the turn gets to choose the color of the tablecloth and napkins each time. You may even be a bit exotic and select different styles, including Chinese, tropical, or even royal for your settings, with fancy napkins and accents. This doesn’t need to be sophisticated or costly - just fun.
Encourage discussion while dining. And if you and your husband end up eating afterward than your kids for practical reasons, at least sit at the table with the children while they are eating so you are a part of the meal. This creates family unit and can hold you together far more as compared to if you are all going square-eyed in front of the Idiot Box.
Good luck!
